An apology

I have to make an apology. When I was getting a distribution together to release ROLF, I dutifully asked Chris Wraight if I could use his sprites, and he was kind enough to say yes.

Unfortunately, the sprites I used (in a9sprite and tools) were designed by Detlef Thielsch. He pointed this out to me in a friendly e-mail last week, and has kindly said that I can continue to use the sprites for private use.

So, my apologies to Detlef for using his sprites without permission. (While I'm at it, I also apologise to Chris, for not using his.)

Thanks to both of them for providing the chance to make ROLF look half way decent and not like a bad copy of Arthur, which is how it would have looked with my attempts at icon drawing.

It's been quiet a long time...

Hope you're still well and hope ROLF hasn't passed on to the great hard disc in the sky.

Yours in eternal hope,
---Will

I'm still here, but not spending very much time on ROLF, I'm afraid. There wasn't exactly a flood of enthusiasm, when I released what I'd done.

At the moment, I'm looking at making a minimal installation that can detect local hardware and establish a GUI, roughly equivalent to the RO ROMs. I'm having some problems loading a frame buffer module and using it. I'm looking at how sysfs works to try to find a generic way of approaching the problem.

I also would like to know why my keyboard stops working in X because of a recursive grep! (I can "type" using cut and paste and the mouse, provided I can find the letters I need already in an terminal window and either kill the grep process or chvt to another console, where the keyboard works fine, and kill it from there.)

I've also revived an older project, an Eiffel compiler, just for fun.

I'm sad to hear you didn't get much feedback - for what it's worth you have my enthusiasm.

If I had any usable technical skills you would have them too, but dabbling in BASIC 15 odd years ago probably doesn't count.

I do hope you keep plugging away there - "a minimal installation that can detect local hardware and establish a GUI, roughly equivalent to the RO ROMs." sounds very exciting in itself.

You have my moral support for what it's worth.
